How to Start Today

  1. Write. Don't think that you have to wait until you have a cabin in the woods or an apartment in New York City.

  2. Read every word out loud. Your eyes, ears, lips, and tongue will work together to catch mistakes and smooth out your prose.

  3. Polish your work, but realize that you have to move on at some point.

  4. Keep every scrap of fiction and poetry that you produce. There's no better way to go back in time and come face to face with an earlier self.

  5. Stay at it. Writers write.
